How Do I Identify a Tree Species?

How to identify a tree species by examining leaves, bark, branches, flowers, and fruit — and when to call an arborist for confirmation.

Observe the tree's leaves: Look at the shape, size, and arrangement of the leaves. Are they simple or compound? What is the shape of the leaf blade? Are the leaves evergreen or deciduous?

  1. Take note of the bark: Is the bark smooth, rough, or scaly? What is the color of the bark? Does the bark have any distinctive patterns or furrows?

  2. Look at the tree's branches and twigs: What is the arrangement of the branches and twigs? Are the leaves coming out of their branch opposite or alternate?

  3. Observe the fruit or flowers: What type of fruit does the tree produce? What is the shape and size of the fruit? When does the tree produce flowers? What is the shape and color of the flowers?

  4. Use a tree identification guide or app: With the information you have gathered, you can use a tree identification guide or app to help you identify the species of the tree.
