Why a leftover stump is a problem
A stump left in place keeps the old tree's problems on your property — and blocks anything new from going in.
Once a tree is down, the stump is the part most people put off. It looks finished. It isn't. Stumps throw sucker shoots for years (poplars and Manitoba maples especially), they catch mowers and ankles, and they remain a tripping hazard until the wood finally rots out. To lay sod, replant a tree in the same spot, or build a patio, shed, or garden bed over the stump — the stump and major surface roots have to be ground out first. Replanting in the same spot also needs the old root mass cleared so the new tree's roots have somewhere to go and aren't competing with decomposing wood for nitrogen. In Edmonton's heavy clay soils, surface roots from poplars, willows, and elms often run a foot or two beyond the dripline and lift sod for years after the tree is down. Grinding deals with the stump and those surface roots in one visit.
- Sucker shoots from poplar, Manitoba maple, and elm stumps can keep coming back for 5+ years
- Sod, replanting, garden beds, patios, and sheds all require the stump and major surface roots gone first
- Edmonton's clay-heavy soils push surface roots wide — those usually need their own grinding pass
- Replanting in the same spot needs deeper grinding (12"+) and amended soil, not a quick 4" shave
How we work
Ground to the depth your next use actually needs.
Our stump-grinding quotes start with the question of what's going in next. Lawn or sod gets 6–8 inches below grade. Garden bed gets 8–10 with the major lateral roots chased out. Replanting a new tree in the same spot gets 12+ inches and a full pass on the root collar so new roots have clean soil to establish in. Hardscape — patio, shed pad, walkway — gets ground to whatever the build needs. We clear utilities through Alberta One-Call before the grinder starts and give you the choice on chips: left on-site as mulch, raked into a windrow, or hauled off. ISA-certified, fully insured, and we bring tight-access machines when the gate is narrower than 36 inches.
How we handle Edmonton stumps
Stump jobs are scoped around what's going in next. Here's the work we typically do.
Lawn-Grade Stump Grinding
Standard residential grind — 6–8 inches below grade, chips raked, hole ready for topsoil and sod or seed. The most common job we run.
Replant-Depth Grinding
Deeper grind (12"+) with the root collar chased out, so a new tree can be planted in the same spot. Includes guidance on species choice and soil amendment.
Hardscape Prep Grinding
Stump and major roots ground to the depth your patio, shed pad, walkway, or deck footings require. Coordinated with your landscaper or builder.
Surface-Root Removal
Separate pass on the lifted, sod-disrupting surface roots that Edmonton poplars, willows, and elms leave behind — often the cause of a lawn that won't lay flat after a removal.
Same-Visit Removal + Grind
Stump grinding booked into the same visit as a tree removal — saves the separate trip charge and finishes the site in one go.
Multi-Stump & Estate Work
Larger residential or estate properties with several stumps from past removals, storm losses, or shelterbelt thinning — bundled pricing, one site visit.
Tight-Access Backyard Grinding
Compact, narrow-frame grinders for gates under 36 inches, raised decks, and back-only access yards common in older neighbourhoods like Westmount and Bonnie Doon.
Disease-Aware Elm & Spruce Stumps
Elm stumps from Dutch Elm Disease removals, ground with sanitation between sites and disposal protocols that don't move inoculum onto your next tree.

How a stump grinding job runs
Marked, ground, raked, and ready.
Quote & utility locate
We measure the stump, confirm access, and ask what's going in next so we know the target depth. Before any grinding day, Alberta One-Call (clickbeforeyoudig.com) is filed for utility locates — gas, water, fibre, and shallow service lines in older Edmonton neighbourhoods need to be cleared and marked.
Site setup
Grinder positioned, debris guards up. On tight-access yards, the compact machine is walked in through gates. We confirm the locate marks before the cutter wheel touches the stump.
Grinding to target depth
Stump ground to the depth your next use needs (6"–12"+), then a second pass on major surface roots if they're causing problems or interfering with the replant. A typical 15–30" Edmonton residential stump takes 30–90 minutes.
Chips, cleanup, and backfill choice
Chips raked into a windrow and either left on-site as mulch (free), moved to another spot on the property (e.g. around shrubs), or hauled off. The hole can be left for you to fill or backfilled with topsoil for an additional charge.
Follow-up guidance
If you're replanting, we can help you pick the species that's perfect for the spot.

Frequently asked
Stump Grinding FAQs
How deep do you grind stumps?
6-12 inches below grade is standard. 6 inches is enough for lawn replacement; 8-10 inches for replanting another tree (with surrounding roots also chipped); deeper if you're putting hardscape over the spot. Tell us what's going on top of the stump and we'll grind to the right depth.
Can I plant a new tree where the old one was?
Yes. To plant in the same spot we grind deeper (12"+), chase out the major roots, and haul the chips off so you can backfill with fresh topsoil and plant the same day — that avoids the nutrient tie-up that fresh chips left in the hole would cause. If the previous tree died of disease, plant a different species. Add a layer of compost when planting and keep the new tree well-watered for the first two years.
How much does stump grinding cost in Edmonton?
Pricing depends on stump diameter, access, and how deep you need it ground. Multi-stump jobs are bundled. Booking stump grinding in the same visit as the removal saves the separate trip charge. We give detailed written quotes before any work begins.
What do you do with the wood chips?
Your choice — we can leave them on-site as mulch (great around shrubs or in landscape beds) or haul them away. Most clients keep them; a few want them gone. If you want fresh chip mulch elsewhere on the property, ask us at the time of grinding and we'll move it for you.
What's the difference between stump grinding and stump removal?
Stump grinding mechanically reduces the stump below ground level so the site can be sodded, replanted, or paved over. Full stump removal extracts the entire root system. Grinding is quicker, less invasive, and the right choice for almost every residential situation. Full removal is only needed when foundation or major landscaping work requires complete root extraction.
Is stump grinding necessary after every tree removal?
Strongly recommended. A leftover stump sprouts suckers for years and gets in the way of mowing. It's especially important after disease removals (Dutch Elm, black knot) — leaving the stump is leaving inoculum on-site for the next tree. Booking grinding in the same visit as removal saves the separate trip charge.
Can you grind stumps in tight or hard-to-reach areas?
Yes. Our compact stump grinders are designed to access narrow spaces — between fences, backyard-only access, landscape beds — without damaging surrounding property.
