What is the best way to protect young trees from damage during winter?
Mulching: Cover the roots of young trees with a thick layer of mulch to protect them from the harsh winter elements. This will also help to retain moisture in the soil. Remember not to touch the trunk of the tree with mulch. Make a mulch donut, not a mulch volcano.
Windbreak: Young trees can be damaged by strong winds during winter, so consider planting a windbreak to protect them. A windbreak can be made of evergreen trees, bushes, or fences.
Wrap: Wrap the trunk of young trees with a tree wrap to protect them from damage caused by rodents, freezing, or thawing. Make sure to remove the wrap in the spring before new growth appears.
Staking: Staking young trees can help to prevent them from being knocked over by strong winds. Make sure to remove the stakes when the tree is established enough to stand on its own. Do not tie tight to the trunk as this can girdle the bark and kill the tree.
Insulation: If a young tree is in a particularly cold area, consider insulating the roots with a layer of mulch. Rakes leaves from fall clean-up work great. Or call us- we produce wood chips from our work and would be glad to provide you with some.
It is important to make sure young trees are well-watered before winter sets in, so they have enough moisture to get through the winter months.
