When to Prune Elm Trees in Edmonton: Oct 1 – Mar 31
Edmonton elms can only be pruned between October 1 and March 31 — the window when the beetle that spreads Dutch elm disease is inactive.
Not many people know that Edmonton is one of the last places on earth you can go to see thousands of old-growth Elm trees. They exist in other places, but not this old and not this grand. These jewels of the city are protected largely in part by Edmonton's strategies to avoid the spread of Dutch elm disease within its population of Elms. If you own an Elm there are some rules you need to know.
In Edmonton you must prune your Elm trees before March 31st or wait until after October 1. The City of Edmonton requires all, "person(s) who owns or occupies land shall keep every elm tree pruned so that the elm tree is free of wood that is dead or dying." If you have an Elm or think you may have an Elm, you have until the end of March to complete any pruning services. City Tree Service will assess for free, and prescribe any deadwood removal with our trained arborists. We make sure your trees are in accordance with the City of Edmonton Community Standards Bylaws 35(1).
Why the restrictions on pruning time? Dutch elm disease is introduced into the tree by a small beetle that burrows under the bark. It leaves behind a fungus. This fungus is what kills the tree. When you cut an Elm during pruning it gives off a pheromone. The beetle detects this pheromone and flies straight to the pruned area to enter and infect the tree. To prevent this, the Edmonton bylaw only allows for pruning in months of the year where the beetles are inactive because of the cold. This window ends on March 31st.
What if a branch breaks in the summer and I need pruning to remove it safely? The City of Edmonton does authorize Elm pruning in the summer months when a portion of the tree to be removed is posing a hazard. You can ask your arborist to assess this for you. They will apply for the proper documentation from the City of Edmonton on your behalf. Done right, you can be authorized in one business day or less.
What if I want to remove the tree? You can remove an Elm tree at any time of the year. You or anyone that you hire can remove it. You are required to dispose of the wood at the city landfill. They have a spot for this material. You can keep the wood for woodworking or firewood but you need to remove the bark first before storing it. The wood should never be transported to other places out of the city or province.
